Lower Town at dusk, with snow on the streets and the church watching from the hill.
Winter 1970-71. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, sits where two rivers meet, under bare ridges and old stone. That’s where It Only Gets Darker: Harpers Ferry takes place.
It’s a grounded psychological horror game. You play Cal Merritt, a junior detective who comes back to the town he grew up in and finds it harder to read than he remembers. Nothing announces itself. The dread comes from small things: a street that empties too early, a familiar face that won’t hold your eye, fog that sits on the river long after it should have lifted.
The look
We’re going for a painted art direction, not photoreal. Dusk light does most of the work. Snow flattens the streets, river fog softens the edges, and the town’s real streets and landmarks anchor every scene: Lower Town, Shenandoah Street, the river path, the graveyard on the hill. The place has to feel like a place first.
Early days
Everything below is early concept art. It’s here to set the mood, and all of it is subject to change as the game takes shape. This is part 1. More of the town is coming in the next posts.
